Tico Style House Building

Sunday
The new team arrived from Mississippi and we got to have orientation right before church and then we were able to attend church. Church this week was translated by Danny so it was great to be able to understand a message from Pastor Miguel. He talked about how we need to stop living in our past and what we did before Christ and start focusing on what is ahead and what God has for us today.
Mississippi Team posing at House Build Site - Monday
In the afternoon after we ate we went out for a prayer walk. We went to the park, Cafetal and our house build site and prayed over all the sites. We ended the day in the park playing with kids that were around.

Monday
We split into two different teams. One team doing construction and one doing social children ministry. The girls went to San Martin and played with the kids. While the men went to the build site and started with the concrete foundation for the house. After playing with the kids, we went to the homeless feeding center at the church and helped there.

In the afternoon the girls played in Alajuelinda and from the pictures, you can see, at least I had fun. Sometimes at 6:8 Ministries the staff have to show the kids how to slide down the slide. You will see what I am talking about below!

Staff being Staff... I love slides!
On Tuesday we split up into two groups again and I was able to go with the construction crew at the church, where we started making all the panels for the house. Most of the house was actually able to be built off site at the church and then brought to the build site. We built over 40 different panels and as you can see below all fit pretty well together as the house. It took us all morning to finished them all and I had a blast working with the team in doing so! In the afternoon, some of the adults when to the Costa Rica style "Home Depot" to get some stuff for the house like cabinets and paint.

Tuesday afternoon, we got the opportunity to go into the community of New Millennium. Last December, New Millennium was condemned by the government and they gave the families 30 days to leave and some money to do so. In January, they had bulldozers and dozed the rest of the houses that were not moved. It was amazing to see houses at this point built on the top of the old houses, only 4 months after the government dozed the whole thing. It was an amazing time playing with the kids and it was cool to go back to that community for the first time in over a year. I love the kids and the families down there!
My little bro Carlos and I on the tire swing! Love this kid!
Wednesday
The Mississippi Team went on their fun day to Jaco Beach with Alix and Lacey. The rest of the staff went to the feeding center at the church, where we were able to feed 25 homeless men and women. We then went to have some R&R in the Escazu mall. We had lunch and went to a movie. It was good to get away for a little bit! The team got back later in the evening from their fun day, they had a great time!

Thursday
We all went to Conception, where the build site is, with all the house panels to start building the house.
We started at 8 in the morning by nailing all the panels together and by noon we had most of the panels up besides the roof. In the afternoon we completed the panels and had to quit a little early at 4 because it started to rain really hard. It was so cool to see how fast the house was being put up and it was really cool to be able to help put up the panels. This group was so fast at doing construction and we were blessed to have two guys that worked construction in the States on the team, they both had great experience!
Putting up the panels - Thursday
I got to use my construction background throughout the week!
After dinner, Brandon, Allison and myself were blessed to be able to play for chapel, with Brandon leading. I was able to play the djembe drum for chapel as well as help sing. We sang a Hillsong and Casting Crowns song as well as Come now is the Time to Worship.  It was such a great experience and I loved every minute of it. It will be the first of many times this summer that we will be able to to play for the teams!

Friday
We had to wake up at 6:30 in the morning to start finishing the house. We had to finish the sides and the roof. We then painted the inside of the house green and the outside blue. Terry (the team leader/youth pastor) and I put up all the door frames, set the doors and then the door stops most of the morning! I had such a blast working with the whole team but Terry was great to work with, we were a great team! We got to install the kitchen cabinets and finish up the bathroom around noon. We then had a short house dedication that Pastor Terry led with some words and Bible verses. We also had cake and drinks to end the project.
Start of painting - Friday morning
Painting done -  Friday 11am
Inside house almost done - Man those doors and door frames look good!!
In the afternoon, the whole group got the opportunity to go to San Jose and got to the Central Market to get all the goodies to finish out the week. My favorite part of my time in San Jose was when Miss Gale bought 6 hammock chairs from a gentleman that kept going down in price the more she said she wanted! Miss Gale was such an amazing woman and she was so sweet to all of us. I was blessed to be able to get cookies and snacks from her when we were out doing ministry. Shout out to Miss Gale for all she did this past week for all of us, you were amazing!
The Team after the House is done - Friday (Couple in middle front)
Saturday
The team left at 3 in the morning, so we had one day without a team. All the staff went to the Verbena Feeding Center at 11 and were able to bless so many kids and adults, it was a rainy mess!

This week with the Mississippi team was amazing! We got to minister to kids, experience an earthquake, and build a house in less than 3 days for a family expecting a baby girl in August. I had so much fun connecting with the team members this week and really enjoyed them as I got to serve alongside them. It was amazing to witness the extra stuff they did, as well as the extra stuff they provided for the family we gave the house to.
All in all, I will always remember this group!

Reflecting on this week, I have a Bible verse that came to mind this week. It comes from Mathew.
Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciple of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
This verse hit me hard this week, just thinking about my purpose for being in Costa. Right now God has me in Costa Rica making disciples, I do not know what the future holds for myself and Costa, but I do know He has me for a season. This coming week, think about what your purpose is in whatever season you are in right now. Make disciples in that season, God is with you always!

Until Next Time
God Bless,
Cody Perman
